About us

Our chairman and founder Ben Vaughan moved to the area and needed a chess club closer to home, rather than travelling 30-40 minutes to his second chess home in Wigston. We started from very humble beginnings, placing an advert in the local circular magazine to see if anybody was interested in over the board (hereafter OTB) chess in the area. People got in touch and many came along to our sessions at the local library. People of all ages learnt and progressed to the point where Ben decided to form a competitive team in the local league.

Anstey Chess Club made our proud debut in the Harrod Cup in the Summer of 2018.

Since then, we have grown and grown with help from all angles:
Stadon Sports and Social Club – Many thanks must go to Stewart and Christine (and Ellen) for their help in giving us a venue to play from with payment for the room coming from drinks purchases.

Anstey Parish Council for their funding donations towards equipment purchases and venue hire.

Chess in Schools and Communities for giving Ben the opportunity to become a tutor for them and providing equipment to that effect.

Anstey Town Charity for their donation more recently – to help towards the costs of the venue hire.

We now play every Thursday evening between September and June from 7pm at Anstey Methodist Church on Cropston Road in Anstey. Free parking is nearby in the Nook.
